It's The Simple Things
I like to complicate things. I take the long way around the block to tell a story. (If it weren’t for Grammarly, these posts would be a hot mess.) I tend to overthink how to create a project. And I can’t help but do things the hard way, even when the easy way is just as good.
Like most creatives, I have a zillion ideas in my head, and the hamsters at the wheel are running in overdrive, trying to keep up.
Case in point, today’s project.
I wanted some furry little bats to add to my Halloween decor, and as soon as I had this thought, the ideas came flooding in.

So, I took a step back and limited the options while still keeping these customizable to any theme or color, and I’ll show you two ways to make them – one version from scratch and one last-minute with shortcuts.
Bats In The Belfry From Scratch
Here’s what we’ll need:
Yarn – I’m using Chunky Big Luxe in Purple Blend and tying off with Red Heart with Love in Aubergine.
Pom Maker – I’m using the 3 3/8″ size Clover Pom Maker
Scissors
Craft Felt
Hot glue – I’m using SureBonder
Gemstones or googly eyes

We will also need the free Go Batty cut files from the Haunted Library. Choose from the SVG file for machine cutting or the PDF file for hand cutting.
Going Batty
To start, assemble your pom maker and begin wrapping the Big Luxe yarn. I try to cover evenly from end to end and fill the pom maker as full as possible.

Next, following the groove, cut through the layers of yarn with your scissors.

Take the Red Heart yarn and slip it between the pom maker’s grooves.
Wrap the yarn around twice before pulling the knot closed as tightly as possible.
Pull yarn around to the other side and knot again to secure.

Carefully trim your pom but do not cut the ends of the knotted yarn, as we will use this for hanging the pom pom bat.

Download the Go Batty template and cut four wing pieces (two for each side) and two ear pieces.
My wings measure 5″ wide and the ears are 1.5″ high but you can resize the pieces if desired.Â

Glue two wing pieces together, then repeat with the remaining two.

Position your pom so that the tails of your yarn knot are facing up to the top.
Position the wings on the pom-pom and glue them into place.

Next, determine where you’d like the ears to sit and glue them into place.

Finally, add the eyes.

Knot the ends of the yarn lengths together, and your Halloween pom-pom bat is ready to hang.

Bats So Easy - The Shortcut Way
For this quick-make method, we will need:
Ready-made faux fur pom-pom with loop – I grabbed this one
Scissors
Craft Felt
Hot glue – I’m using SureBonder
Googly eyes or gemstones

Using the template, cut four wing pieces (two for each side) and two ear pieces.

Just like the above version, glue two wing pieces together, then repeat with the remaining two.

Add a bit of glue to the narrow end of an ear and pinch it together.

Place your ready-made pom-pom with the loop facing up.
Position the wings on the pom-pom and glue them into place.

Determine where you’d like the ears to sit, and glue them into place.

Lastly, add the eyes.

That’s it! Your last-minute Halloween pom pom bat is ready to haunt the night.

It’s love a first fright! I can’t wait to add these to my decor. I plan to use them as ornaments, but these would also be a fun way to dress up a scare package or hang from the rearview mirror.
