I’m enjoying the sights, sounds, and sweets of Fall.
Yes, the sweets!
I’ve been indulging in the spice of the pumpkin – pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pie, plus the occasional spiced pumpkin latte.
Pumpkins aside, one of my favorite spoils lately has been visiting the Farmer’s Market to pick up a childhood favorite, Peppernuts.

If you’re not familiar, Peppernuts, or Pfeffernusse, are German cookies full of nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and a hint of black pepper.
My grandma used to make these every holiday season. She covered every inch of her countertops with Peppernuts, and her small kitchen filled with the aroma of these little cookies.
Making these delightful bites is pretty time intensive, which keeps me from making them. When I spied bags of these at the market, I couldn’t get my money out fast enough.
Unfortunately, according to my bathroom scales, I’ve indulged a bit too much, so I need to reel this in before everything gets covered in chocolate and peppermint.

But – before I cut back on the sugar rush, I thought I’d make just one more pumpkin treat – Pumpkin Cheesecake Dip.
The recipe calls for whipped topping. I usually use Cool Whip, but I want to see if I can cut a little sugar and avoid the less-than-natural ingredients, so today, I’m opting for Reddi Whip.
Since I’m making this recipe specifically for the blog, and taste-o-vision has yet to be invented, today is a good day to test a substitution. (Yes, I’m treating it as an experiment, so I can have an excuse to taste-test.)

We will need:
8 oz whipped topping
8 oz cream cheese, softened
15 oz pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Whip It Good
First, using a mixer, whisk the cream cheese until smooth.

Next, add the pumpkin puree and whisk until well blended.

Gently fold in the whipped topping and pumpkin pie spice until thoroughly mixed.

Chill for approximately 20-30 minutes, then serve cold.
I like to pair my dip with gingersnaps, graham crackers, or apple slices – yum!

So, what about that substitution? Cool Whip is thicker, more stable, and a tad sweeter.
The Reddi Whip works fine and is more natural, but it has more calories.
My advice is, for your first make, go with the Cool Whip.
