When you peek into the costume closet at Making Make Believe, one of the first pieces you will see is my witch costume from our Witches Ball, circa 2006. I love this one! It’s simple, elegant, easy to wear and the traditional color combo stands out in a crowd.
Normally, I would make my own costume, but this party’s size caused my good judgment to kick in, and I commissioned this piece.
All cotton construction, the costume top is done in black and features these wonderfully exaggerated bat-wing sleeves. (Watch out when you’re near the dip bowl.) The versatile neckline can be worn on or off the shoulder.
The skirt is full enough for a petticoat if desired but can still be worn loosely. It consists of alternating panels of orange and black and an elastic waist.
The corset is also two-tone in orange and black with an easy lace-up front and is unstructured (i.e., no boning) for comfort. I love the silhouette it provides without being restrictive.
Other pieces include a store-bought hat with oodles of orange marabou trim and witch shoes (not shown). A vintage corn broom that I hacked finishes off the look. (Simple how-to found here).

The Witches Ball was held at Marymount, which used to be a Catholic women’s college. And, of all of the Halloween parties we’ve hosted, this event may be my favorite.

And, because I know someone will ask, the pillow shown in the first picture is from Marshall’s, purchased during the Halloween season 2020. Distortions made the foam-filled, latex cat prop. It is no longer being produced, so watch for it on the second-hand market.
A fun and unique costume doesn’t have to be complicated or uncomfortable. I hope that this inspires you to create your own witchy ensemble.
